Definition: Superbug is a term used in the media to describe organisms that cause diseases in humans that are difficult to treat. These organisms may or may not be very infectious, but once ill with the organism, the disease is more difficult to treat with drugs which were once effective. Superbugs are either drug resistant or no longer cured by any drugs known to man. Examples of superbugs are:
- XDR TB
- Acinetobacter baumannii
- MRSA
- Drug-resistant gonorrhea
