Definition: Meningococcal meningitis is caused by a bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis, sometimes shortened to N. meningitidis. Sometimes meningitis caused by this bacteria is just called bacterial meningitis, although there are other bacteria that can cause meningitis. There are meningococcal meningitis vaccines to four serogroups of the bacteria, identified by letters and/or numbers: A, C , Y and W135.
