When to Replace a Mask to Prevent Spread of Infectious Diseases

Use common sense. Replace a disposable mask:

• After each use.
• If damaged.
• If it becomes wet, or hard to breathe through.
• If it is expired.
• If the mask is visibly dirty, it should be replaced.

Properly disinfect reusable personal protection equipment such as reusable masks after each use or between users. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions if available. You should also disinfect personal protection equipment after using for safe disposal.
