Dilute Chlorine Bleach Solution: 1 part 5 per cent bleach to 99 parts water. See bleach bottle for percentage of chlorine. Here's one example of how to dilute chlorine bleach properly. For a 5 gallon bucket:
- Mix 3 ounces of chlorine bleach (about 1/3 cup) with
- 5 gallons water minus 1/3 cup of water.
- Allow clothing, shoes and other reusable equipment soak for 15 minutes. The solution can also be used to rinse gloves and boots after having contact with possible contaminate. Health care personnel working in basic conditions can use this solution after leaving a patient's room.
- After soaking, the water should still smell of bleach. If not, add more bleach and wait another 15 minutes.
Important Common Sense Note: Dispose of solution after 24 hours or before if solution no longer smells like chlorine. If the solution does not smell like chlorine that means that all the chlorine has been used up and there is none left to kill any germs that still may be around.
After disinfecting, wash clothing as usual with laundry detergent. Rubber shoes and aprons can be reused after disinfection.
Proper Disposal of Disposable PPE: Disposable masks, aprons and other PPE CANNOT be reused and MUST be discarded after disinfection. Disinfection assures safe disposable PPE.
