Definition: A lumbar puncture is putting a thin needle into the lower part of the back where spinal fluid is easiest to reach. The goal is to remove spinal fluid from the spinal canal for diagnostic testing. For example, it is used to diagnose and define the cause of meningitis. The lumbar puncture procedure requires local anesthesia and lasts a few minutes.
