Prepare for Transmission Control

Transmission control reduces the spread of disease and can reduce illness and death.

  • Use masks when in close contact with infected people or animals.
  • Use gloves if you must handle diseased poultry or people who have fallen ill.
  • Wash hands before and after contact with animals, people or contaminated materials. Use ordinary soap and warm water. If water is not available, use a no-rinse, alcohol-based hand cleanser.
  • Cough into disposable tissues, or your shirt if tisses are not available.
  • Disinfect contaminated materials, clothes, egg crates, cutting boards, etc. with chlorine bleach, 4 teaspoons bleach (20 ml) to one gallon water (approximately 4 l).
  • For transmission control for poultry farmers or those who live on farms, please see the USDA Biosafety for the Birds Tips to Prevent Poultry Disease
  • Stock up on:
    • masks (Disposable particulate respirators types: N-95, N-99 or N-100)
    • gloves (disposable lightweight nitrile or vinyl or heavy duty rubber gloves that can be disinfected with a chlorine bleach solution)
    • soap, no-rinse hand cleanser (alcohol-based 60-90%)
    • laundry detergent
    • chlorine bleach
    • a dropper and medicine dosifier to measure out chlorine bleach
    • trash bags.
