Transmission control reduces the spread of disease and can reduce illness and death.
- Use masks when in close contact with infected people or animals.
- Use gloves if you must handle diseased poultry or people who have fallen ill.
- Wash hands before and after contact with animals, people or contaminated materials. Use ordinary soap and warm water. If water is not available, use a no-rinse, alcohol-based hand cleanser.
- Cough into disposable tissues, or your shirt if tisses are not available.
- Disinfect contaminated materials, clothes, egg crates, cutting boards, etc. with chlorine bleach, 4 teaspoons bleach (20 ml) to one gallon water (approximately 4 l).
- For transmission control for poultry farmers or those who live on farms, please see the USDA Biosafety for the Birds Tips to Prevent Poultry Disease
