Although the CDC principally works in the United States, as part of their global health program, almost 200 CDC staff members work in different programs in 44 countries outside of the United States. The World Health Organization is the international organization responsible for the world’s response to pandemic flu. See the Updated Human Cases of H5N1 Bird Flu Since 2003 for up to date country information for bird flu cases in humans.

The CDC does not have staff in the following countries that have had cases of H5N1 bird flu in humans: Azerbaijan, Djibouti, Indonesia, Iraq, and Turkey. The CDC, however, collaborates with the WHO in assessing health situations in countries where there is no CDC staff presence.

The hardest hit countries, in terms of human cases of H5N1 bird flu, have been: Indonesia and Vietnam followed by Thailand and China.
