Although birds are the main targets for avian influenza, it can also infect other animals, such as cats, pigs, whales, and other mammals. At this time, there have not been any reported cases in humans of avian influenza contracted from any other animals but birds.
Transmission Between Animals and People
The Center for Disease Control shows some instances of animal to animal and animal to human transmission of avian influenza viruses (not just the H5N1 subtype). In general, transmission to humans of avian influenza is rare, and if it happens it comes from birds and their derivatives, not from other animals, although pigs have been implicated before.
