American Idol: Danny Gokey's Wife
American Idol fans, vote for Danny Gokey! Okay... so I haven't actually voted since the days of Kelly and Justin, but I'm tempted to do it this season because of Mr. Gokey. Even Fantasia agrees that Danny will be the winner this season.
Danny Gokey has received media attention not only for his soulful voice, great stage presence, and Robert-Downey-Jr-esque good looks, but because he is a young widower, having lost his wife Sophia only weeks before his AI audition.
Sophia Gokey died at the age of 27 from complications of a congenital heart disease. Congenital heart disease is a condition in which the heart develops abnormally during fetal development. In most cases of congenital heart disease, the cause is unknown, but some cases can be attributed to chromosomal or genetic defects, and others to infectious disease origins, such as Rubella. (Good thing there's a very safe and effective vaccine available to prevent Rubella!) In fact, several infectious diseases have now been linked to congenital defects in developing fetuses.
Danny Gokey has set up a foundation, Sophia's Heart Foundation, in honor of his late wife, whose main purpose is to raise money and support for children who have suffered poverty, disease, broken families, and broken dreams.
Kudos to you, Danny. You're already an inspiration to the rest of us. (And I hope you win too!)

YOU GO DANNY! WE’RE ALL VOTING FOR YOU (AND PRAYING FOR YOU TOO)!
You will always be the best Danny! You’re grief is shared son. I lost my son 10 years ago at the young age of 19 due to a drunk driver. I feel your pain. You are in my heart and prayers. We look forward to your first albumn!!!! Much love from Alpharetta GA.
Danny, you are such an inspiration. I’m so glad to see you carry on your wife’s name in such a beautiful way. I was born with a CHD and have had 3 valve replacements, and I’m only 32 so I know I could have more. It really hits home to see other people with similar problems die during surgery. Most people don’t understand the fear that we have. My 3 yr old also has a CHD, and I cry at the thought of her going through a fraction of what I have. Hopefully your wife’s legacy can help build awareness.
