Two Malaria Drugs Pulled

Saturday March 1, 2008
Two malaria drugs produced by Glaxo were pulled after they were found to cause anemia, reports the International Herald Tribune. Dacart is a drug that combined another anti-malarial Lapdap with an artesunate compound recommended by the WHO. Effective malaria drugs are few and far between as malaria becomes resistant to treatment with many drugs that used to be effective. Malaria itself causes anemia, but Dacart causes anemia in those who have a hereditary enzyme disorder that estimated to affect 10-25% of all Africans.

Interesting blog post, Anna. I’m curious to see if this will really spur competition in anti-malaria drugs.
